Barricades, memorials removed from George Floyd Square by Minneapolis officials

Published

on

Minneapolis officials have removed parts of a memorial and cement barricades at the George Floyd Square, the site where Floyd died in May 2020 after a city police officer kneeled on his neck for nearly nine minutes.

City work crews began the process early Thursday morning, in an effort to clear the intersection of Chicago Avenue and 38th Street to help businesses that have blocked off from vehicles and shoppers and in response to crime that has occurred there over roughly the past year.

“Barricades have been removed so that ultimately (the intersection) will be reconnected into the neighborhood and traffic will be able to resume,” city spokeswoman Sarah McKenzie told CNN. “This intersection will never go back to ‘normal.’ This city is really doing everything it can with the community to preserve as many art pieces as possible.”

McKenzie effort was done in coordination with the Agape Movement group.

Minnesota Democratic Gov. Tim Walz said the effort was “community lead.”

Such artifacts as the fist sculpture in the center of the intersection will remain, while other will be put in storage. Some residents reportedly objected the removal of the barricades, setting up makeshift ones, that on Thursday temporarily blocked vehicle traffic again.

Stefanik cosponsors House GOP bill that would ban Black Lives Matter banners at U.S. embassies

Published

on

Fresh off her replacement of Rep. Liz Cheney as House GOP Conference chairwoman, Rep. Elise Stefanik is cosponsoring a bill to prevent U.S. embassies from hoisting “political” flags, which would include the Black Lives Matter banner.

The Stars and Stripes Act is a direct response to Secretary of State Antony Blinken’s recent cable to chiefs of mission, obtained by Foreign Policy, that grants “blanket written authorization” to display such flags and banners. It’s not a requirement but rather an encouragement to display the flags as “appropriate in light of local conditions,” a spokesperson said.

The GOP House bill calls for a ban on flags at diplomatic and consular posts with few exceptions including the U.S. flag, state flags and flags of host countries.

Lead sponsor Rep. Nicole Malliotakis condemned the State Department’s encouragement to fly “inherently political flags that are in no way affiliated” with the U.S. government.
In a press release on the eve of Memorial Day weekend, she said the authorization was “an insult to those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our flag and our nation.”

Malliotakis rattled off a list of past and present “partisan political demands and initiatives” by the Black Lives Matter organization, including former President Trump’s impeachment and permanent ban from social media platforms, defunding the police and expelling Republican members of Congress who “voted against the certification of electors” for Arizona and Pennsylvania.

Stefanik got a quote in the press release by her fellow New York congresswoman: saying the U.S. should not fly “the flag of a political organization founded by Marxists.”

California GOP Rep. Darrell Issa, another cosponsor, said the Biden administration has an “emphatic misunderstanding of what this nation represents in every corner of the globe” if it wants to display unrelated banners “when the mood strikes.”

Mississippi GOP Rep. Michael Guest struck a conciliatory tone.

“The death of George Floyd,” the anniversary of which prompted Blinken’s move, “opened important discussions surrounding police reform in the United States,” he said in the press release.

“I encourage every American to exercise their First Amendment right to free speech and to continue civil dialogue around this matter,” Guest continued. “However, these discussions should not be aired out on an international stage.”

Black Lives Matter St. Paul Founder Says He ‘Resigned’ After Learning the ‘Ugly Truth’

Published

on

A Black Lives Matter chapter founder in Minnesota has resigned, claiming that the organization isn’t concerned about helping black communities or helping improve the education quality in Minneapolis, according to a video published last week.

Rashard Turner, the founder of a Black Lives Matter chapter in neighboring St. Paul, said he started the branch in 2015 but became disillusioned roughly a year after becoming “an insider” within the left-wing organization, according to a video released by TakeCharge—a group that rejects various provisions promoted by Black Lives Matter, including critical race theory-linked claims that the United States is inherently racist.

“After a year on the inside, I learned they had little concern for rebuilding black families, and they cared even less about improving the quality of education for students in Minneapolis,” Turner said in the video.

“That was made clear when they publicly denounced charter schools alongside the teachers union. I was an insider in Black Lives Matter. And I learned the ugly truth. The moratorium on charter schools does not support rebuilding the black family. But it does create barriers to a better education for black children. I resigned from Black Lives Matter after a year and a half. But I didn’t quit working to improve black lives and access to a great education.”

Representatives for Black Lives Matter didn’t respond to a request for comment by press time.

Approximately a year after George Floyd’s death in Minneapolis, support for the group has plummeted in the United States, according to a recent poll from Morning Consult. Only 48 percent hold favorable views about the organization, down from 61 percent last May.

A USA Today survey found that 36 percent of Americans now would describe Floyd’s death as a murder, down from 60 percent last summer.

A poll in May conducted by the newspaper revealed that the Black Lives Matter call to “defund the police” has even less support, with only 18 percent of respondents supporting it.

It comes amid recent controversies surrounding Patrisse Cullors, a co-founder of the organization who resigned after a series of reports about her real estate portfolio and finances. Following the reports’ publication last month, Cullors asserted that she didn’t misuse any donations to Black Lives Matter.

In a statement last week, Cullors—a self-described “trained Marxist”—said, “With smart, experienced, and committed people supporting the organization during this transition, I know that BLMGNF is in good hands … The foundation’s agenda remains the same—eradicate white supremacy and build life-affirming institutions.”

Cullors told The Associated Press that her departure was planned more than a year in advance and wasn’t related to the reports about her finances and her multiple homes, claiming they “were right-wing attacks” meant to defame her character.
