Up until now, I’ve never really considered all the ways that Naked and Afraid is actually just a riff on Winnie The Pooh, but considering the fact that both franchises feature characters who live in the woods, face brutal adversaries (snakes and bugs, Heffalumps and Woozles), and endure harsh weather conditions (including blustery days), they’re much more alike than I thought.
This week’s upcoming episode of Naked and Afraid takes the comparison to a whole new level though, when one of the contestants goes full Pooh Bear by attempting to harvest some honey while pantsless.
This week’s episode features professional backpacker Patrick French and hunter Malorie Romero, who have to survive 21 days in an Argentine swamp filled with stinging bugs and plagued by violent storms. In an exclusive clip from the episode, which airs this Sunday, Patrick seeks out some sustenance by climbing a tree inhabited by a hive of bees in search of honey.
As Patrick climbs the tree, Malorie uses a branch that’s been lit on fire to draw smoke into their hive. Patrick reaches his hand in to try and cut out some honeycomb with his knife, but the hive isn’t having it. After feeling around in the hive for a moment, he exclaims, “Son of a bitch!” (Decidedly not a quote from the Tao of Pooh, but I digress.)
“Probably got stung like five or six times,” he says after climbing down and picking the stingers out of his fingertips with his teeth.
Luckily all of the stings were located on his hand and not his… Hundred Acre Wood.
But it wasn’t for nothing, as Malorie notices that the honey harvest was successful and he actually pulled some of the comb out along with the stingers.
“Oh, you grabbed some, though! That’s so awesome, good job!” she says, offering him a place to sit – a Thoughtful Spot. Patrick adds, “Hand in the honey pot? Not a good idea.”
Naked and Afraid airs Sundays at 8 p.m. ET/PT on Discovery and is available to stream the same day on discovery+.
