Edwin Diaz’s injury just latest ‘that’s so Mets’ moment

The torn patellar tendon that Edwin Diaz suffered Wednesday night while celebrating a Puerto Rico victory in the World Baseball Classic was an unexpected, random fluke.

But it aligns with a lengthy list of past agonizing moments across the Mets’ history.

Here are some of those other incidents that have prompted the “that’s so Mets” reactions:

Vince Coleman firecracker

Outfielder Vince Coleman lit a firecracker and threw it into a cluster of Dodger Stadium fans — while riding in the Jeep of the Dodgers’ Eric Davis — in 1993, and it injured three people.

After being charged with a felony, Coleman pled guilty to reduced charges.

Wilpons lose millions with Madoff

As The Post’s Mike Vaccaro wrote in 2021, Bernie Madoff and his Ponzi scheme “nearly ruined the Mets” because of the losses sustained by Mets owner Fred Wilpon, who had invested with Madoff.

Playoff card game

When Rickey Henderson was taken out of Game 6 of the 1999 NLCS, he told Bobby Bonilla to grab a deck of cards so Henderson could “relax my mind.”

So they played cards. In the clubhouse. During a playoff game the Mets eventually lost.

K-rod knocking out his father-in-law

Then-Mets closer Francisco Rodriguez was charged with assaulting his father-in-law in a tunnel outside the Mets’ clubhouse at Citi Field in 2010 following a loss to the Rockies.

Mr. Met gives the bird

A 2017 video revealed the team mascot giving fans the middle finger, which resulted in the Mets issuing an apology.

Duaner Sanchez in the cab

In July 2006, Duaner Sanchez was involved in an accident while in a Miami taxi, as a drunk driver crashed into Sanchez’s cab, causing a separated right shoulder that required surgery.

He didn’t pitch again for the Mets until the 2008 season.

Bob Ojeda gardening incident

Starting pitcher Bob Ojeda was forced to undergo surgery in September 1988 after he nearly severed part of the middle finger on his pitching hand with electric hedge clippers.

He missed the playoffs, and the Mets lost in the NLCS to the Dodgers.
