Hennepin County spent $3.7 million on the trial of former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin, according to documents obtained by The Center Square via the Freedom of Information Act.

Securing the Hennepin County courthouse was the second-largest expense – $773,412 paying for barbed wire, razor fencing, barricades, and boarding up windows. The most significant expense was employee overtime costing $1.1 million.

Other expenses included:

A leased drone detection equipment cost $18,000Food costs ate up $18,893Van rental for jury transport: $21,905Supplies cost $12,958

On April 20, Chauvin was sentenced to 22.5 years in prison for the murder of George Floyd after the former officer knelt on Floyd’s neck for more than nine minutes while Floyd said he couldn’t breathe. Three other officers – J. Alexander Kueng, Thomas Lane, and Tou Thao – watched and are scheduled to be tried in state court next year on charges of aiding and abetting second-degree murder and manslaughter.

All four also face pending federal charges that they violated Floyd’s civil rights.

Costs have piled onto taxpayers since Floyd’s May 2020 death, including the expenditure of $11.7 million in a fund designated for natural disasters to rebuild Hennepin County.

In a lawsuit, Floyd’s family settled with the city of Minneapolis for a record $27 million.

The Minnesota National Guard response to initial riots cost nearly $13 million, who have been deployed more than three times since then.

About 3,500 National Guard protected Minneapolis during the six-week trial watched worldwide, costing $25 million.

Mississippi attorney general asks Supreme Court to overturn Roe V. Wade

Published

on

Mississippi’s Attorney General urged the Supreme Court on Thursday to overturn Roe V. Wade when the court comes together in the next term.

“This Court should overrule Roe and Casey,” Mississippi Attorney General Lynn Fitch said in a brief, according to The Hill. “Roe and Casey are egregiously wrong. They have proven hopelessly unworkable. … And nothing but a full break from those cases can stem the harms they have caused.”

Finch was referencing a 1992 decision of a case Planned Parenthood v. Casey, which upheld the landmark Roe V. Wade case.

The attorney general made the plea to the Supreme Court as it is set to debate an abortion restriction legislation that essentially bans all abortions after 15 weeks of pregnancy that Mississippi passed in 2018.

“Under the Constitution, may a state prohibit elective abortions before viability? Yes. Why? Because nothing in constitutional text, structure, history, or tradition supports a right to abortion,” Fitch added, arguing that the case should be overturned.

Federal court unanimously rules the CDC’s eviction moratorium is unlawful

Published

The U.S. Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals unanimously ruled Friday the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention overstepped its authority and engaged in federal overreach by issuing an eviction moratorium during the pandemic.

The Cincinnati-based federal court agreed with a lower court ruling, which had called the moratorium on evictions unlawful, according to The Epoch Times.

“It is not our job as judges to make legislative rules that favor one side or another,” Circuit Judge John Bush, who President Donald Trump appointed, said in the court’s opinion. “But nor should it be the job of bureaucrats embedded in the executive branch. While landlords and tenants likely disagree on much, there is one thing both deserve: for their problems to be resolved by their elected representatives.”

The CDC originally made the order in September 2020 to ban evictions for tenants that lost money due to the pandemic and was eventually upheld by Congress. The policy is set to expire on July 31.

Trump Ally Tom Barrack secures $250 million bond to leave jail

Published

on

Thomas Barrack, a friend and ally to former President Donald Trump, reached an agreement Friday with prosecutors to be released from jail on a $250 million bond, after being arrested for allegedly violating foreign lobbying laws.

A federal magistrate made the order to allow Barrack to leave jail on the bond, which is secured by at least $5 million in cash and the requirement he wear a GPS bracelet to monitor his location, according to CNN.

Barrack is set to appear in court Monday for his arraignment. The bail comes after he was arrested Tuesday on charges of violating foreign lobbying laws, obstructing justice and making false statements.

Barrack, who was chairman of Trump’s inaugural committee, was arrested and charged with illegal foreign lobbying on behalf of the United Arab Emirates, purportedly to advance the UAE’s interests with the Trump administration.
