A legislative effort to ban vaccine passports and punish businesses that require proof of COVID-19 inoculations narrowly failed in Arizona.

The Senate called House Bill 2190 for a vote Thursday, even though a couple of Republicans were missing from what was expected to be a party-line vote.

Should it have succeeded, the measure would have banned government entities, businesses, ticket venues and others from either discriminating against unvaccinated people or offering special benefits to those based on vaccination status.

Individuals breaking the law faced felony charges. Businesses that defied the law would have seen any state-issued business licenses suspended.

The bill exempted much of the health care industry from the requirements.

Gov. Doug Ducey banned public entities from requiring any proof of vaccination via an executive order he signed in April.

With a couple of absent Republicans, the party needed every member of their caucus to support the bill.

Sen. T.J. Shope, R-Coolidge, was the only Republican to vote against the measure. The former House speaker owns a supermarket, something he said guided his decision.

“I believe in private property rights and the rights of the sole proprietor,” Shope said, giving the hypothetical of an immunocompromised barber who can’t get a vaccine. “This bill in its current form would have the heavy hand of government shut that business down and leave that individual without a livelihood, and that is something that I cannot stand for.”

Sen. David Gowan, R-Sierra Vista, responded, saying the bill takes the appropriate stance on the rights of Arizonans.

“We all believe in private property rights, but we also believe in individual rights,” he said. “Any time that you have to go into a business and they can say, ‘Let me see your passport. Show me what you’ve done. Show me you’ve injected something in your arm.’ That is not proper. That is not individual rights.”

Sponsors of the bill may call it for reconsideration before the current session ends.

Wednesday, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene tweeted:

Congratulations to the people of Texas for becoming a Constitutional Carry state!

Americans should not be forced to ask government for permission to exercise Second Amendment rights.

We need to get this done in Georgia!

Rep. Greene congratulates Texas for becoming a Constitutional Carry state, calls for Georgia to do the same

Per Texas Tribune:

Texans can carry handguns without a license or training starting Sept. 1, after Gov. Greg Abbott on Wednesday signed the permitless carry bill into law.

House Bill 1927 eliminates the requirement for Texas residents to obtain a license to carry handguns if they’re not prohibited by state or federal law from possessing a gun. The signing was reported by the Texas Legislature’s official website, which tracks the progress of legislation. Abbott’s office has announced a ceremonial signing of the bill and other gun-related legislation at 11 a.m. Thursday.

Terry McAuliffe secures victory in Virginia Democratic gubernatorial primary

Published

on

Former Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe won Virginia’s Democratic gubernatorial primary on Tuesday, easily defeating Lieutenant Gov. Justin Fairfax and three other candidates.

Current Gov. Ralph Northam was ineligible to compete because the state’s constitution bars governors from serving consecutive terms.

McAuliffe, who previously held the Virginia governorship from January 2014 until January 2018, will compete against Republican gubernatorial nominee Glenn Youngkin during the general election contest.

BREAKING: Florida Bans “Critical Race Theory” in Public Schools

Published

on

The Florida Board of Education announced a ban on “Critical Race Theory” in Public Schools earlier today.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis said “Florida’s education system exists to create opportunity for our children. Critical Race Theory teaches kids to hate our country and to hate each other. It is state-sanctioned racism and has no place in Florida schools.”

Florida has blasted the far-left philosophy, saying “The woke class wants to teach kids to hate each other, rather than teaching them how to read, but we will not let them bring nonsense ideology into Florida’s schools.”

“As the Governor of Florida, I love this state, and I love my country,” he added. “I find it unthinkable that there are other people in positions of leadership in the federal government who believe that we should teach kids to hate our country. We will not stand for it here in Florida. I’m proud that we are taking action today to ensure our state continues to have the greatest educational system in the nation.”

Appearing on Fox News last week DeSantis says he will ban “any departure from accurate history,” and will not support any Republican candidate for school board who supports critical race theory or mandatory masking of children.
